Sed Jalal, The Employee of the Maskan Bank

20202022Documentary TheatreFestivalInstallation

Presented as an Installation-Performance at the University of Tehran, this production earned recognition as one of the standout performances at the 2020 Tadjrobe Theatre Festival. Rooted in the life of an ordinary Iranian man post-revolution, it offers a poignant exploration. Originally scheduled for 2020, the performance faced a postponement due to the pandemic, eventually finding its stage in 2022 at the Tadjrobe Theatre Festival.

Inspired by Saeed Soltanpour’s groundbreaking work “Mr. Abbas, The Worker of Iran National Inc.”—also known as “Abbas Agha, Kargar-e Iran National”—considered Iran’s first documentary play, this installation featured four distinct rooms and video art to illuminate the life of the artist’s father and family.

The initial room presented collaged pieces of distorted birth certificates alongside relevant newspaper excerpts, drawn from the Ettela’at newspaper archive, encouraging varied interpretations by juxtaposing random dates with corresponding news headlines.

The second room delved into the artist’s father’s aspirations, showcasing three sets of clothing: a Bruce Lee Kung Fu uniform representing martial arts ambitions, a Maskan Bank uniform symbolizing his professional life, and a hospital uniform acknowledging his time during a heart surgery.

In the third room, conceptual shapes using mannequins and personal objects reflected on family life, with recreated images from the family album evoking the artist’s emotions.

The final stage transformed the ground with film negatives, exploring the father’s penchant for watching movies and music videos. Paria Beigi designed the poster, and Amin Simiar contributed to video arts and performance setup, contributing to the immersive experience.
